Learning something new every day!

About Me...

In June 2007 I decided to look into returning to school for my Bachelor's degree. I had been managing okay with my Associate's degree, but the idea of moving back home [South Florida] without more education under my belt was not so appealing. By the end of July I had started my first class. Two years later I am five classes away from completing that degree and my oldest child is about to start her college journey. About This Blog...

With this blog I hope to share some of what I have learned through my experiences as an online student and now, mom of a college student. Here you will find great scholarships, student deals, and other information to help with your voyage into higher education. Happy Studying!

What I Learned Wednesday - Life is Short, Make the Most of It

Join the fun, post what you learned this week, and link up below. The code for the image is located in my sidebar. All I ask is you link back to this post. Oh, and make sure you link to your post and not your blog in general, okay?

This week I took my 16 year old daughter to get her driver's license. Let me explain. In Virginia the kids can get their learner's permit when they are 15 1/2 years old. Once they turn 16 years and 3 months they can get their 180-day license (they must wait 9 months from the date of receiving their learner's until they may get their 180-day license). This is a piece of paper they carry along with their learner's permit until they receive notice from the court to pick up their permanent license. Today we arrived at the courthouse promptly and took our seats and waited.

About a year and a half ago I did this very same thing with my oldest child (now 18). So, I knew what to expect although this time seemed to go by a bit faster. The sheriff's officer reminds us to turn off our cell phones. If it rings, whether it be parent or child, the child will not get their license, so sorry. Next, the judge enters and says a few words. Then the state trooper does his spiel on safety belts, zero-tolerance for alcohol, curfew, cell phone rules, etc. And then the part that always gets to me - the video.

Back in June 2006 a co-worker of mine was in a fatal car accident. She was a few weeks shy of her 20th birthday and a few days shy of her 1 year out of high school. It is believed she fell asleep at the wheel. Alcohol did play some role in this as her and another girl were partying the night before. Additionally, she was not wearing her seat belt. The passenger walked away with a few scratches and appears in court each time licenses are issued to tell her story. The video is a tribute to Melissa's life, and death. And I cry every time I see it.

My oldest child is 2 years younger than Melissa was when she died. I can not imagine having only two more years of memories. I have no idea of how her family must feel. I do know what it is like to miss someone because they died at an early age, but losing a child is different. And it is one feeling I hope to never have first hand.

Life is short. Spend time with those you love. Do not let hate or negativity take hold of you. Take time for the little things. And make the most of each and every day. I know I will.

What I Learned Wednesday - Take Time for Yourself

Join the fun, post what you learned this week, and link up below. The code for the image is located in my sidebar. All I ask is you link back to this post. Oh, and make sure you link to your post and not your blog in general, okay?

This past weekend my family and I took some time out and took a little trip to Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom. School for my youngest two (13 & 16) starts today and my oldest starts college at the end of the month. Me, I am perpetually in school, but have a week off between semesters next week. It was nice to get away from school, computers, blogging, and phones and just be for a few days.

I had won four tickets to any Six Flags park and was really glad I did. The family wanted to go to a theme park this summer, but did not think we could afford it. Not that the trip was entirely free. The four free tickets were a nice discount, though. We spent seven glorious hours at the Six Flags last Saturday; most of it in the water park. It was hot!

Each night I read before falling asleep. And it was really nice being with the family without all of the technological distractions. Taking time for yourself can be as simple as reading a few chapters of a book each day for fun or a nap in the middle of the day. Just remember to unwind and unplug every once in awhile and recharge those batteries. You will be glad you did; I am.

What have you learned this week? Grab the button from my sidebar, then add a link to your post below using MckLinky. Not sure how to link up? Leave a comment or send me an email (or both) and I will happily walk you through it.

What I Learned Wednesday - It Takes Money To Make Money

Join the fun, post what you learned this week, and link up below. The code for the image is located in my sidebar. All I ask is you link back to this post. Oh, and make sure you link to your post and not your blog in general, okay?

Sure, we all know the saying 'it takes money to make money'. One usually says this when making a bet or buying stocks, but it is also true with careers. Think about it. In order to make decent money you have to spend *a lot* of money on an education. My daughter just finished her financial aid package. Not including the Pell Grant and not including any increase in tuition or interest accrued, her total financing will be $55,000! All of this just to become a teacher. No wonder they complain about the low pay.

My return to college has cost me $30,000 in loans and another $3,000 in textbooks. Not to mention the two calculators (1 scientific and 1 financial). I could add the cost of the MacBook I purchased and the upgrade to DSL, but they benefit me in other ways as well. Sadly, when all is said and done there is no guarantee of a job to pay for this lovely education. Yet, without the education there would most certainly be no job, at least not the kind of job offering the kind of pay I would want.

What have you learned this week? Grab the button from my sidebar, then add a link to your post below using MckLinky. Not sure how to link up? Leave a comment or send me an email (or both) and I will happily walk you through it.

Education Investment Planner

Sallie Mae has a free tool available for those wanting to know how much money it is going to take to get that degree. It answers the following four questions:

  1. How much might college really cost?
  2. Is there a way to compare costs from different schools?
  3. What will my student loan payment be after I graduate?
  4. What are the different ways I can pay for school?

Did you know when I started pursuing my degree at Keiser University I did not know how much it was going to cost? I had a vague idea, sure. All in all, I estimate the cost of my returning to school to be $25,000, not including books. When I am finished I will have taken 30 classes with an average book cost of $100, paid out of pocket (not through loans).

In-state versus out-of-state; local versus going away. It costs almost three times as much to attend an out-of-state school. My daughter did not apply to her first choice school due to the expense. Room and board plus a meal plan really adds to the cost of an education as well. If you have a college nearby, then save some money by living at home instead on in the dorm.

Many schools are seeing a decrease in enrollment. What does this mean for you? It could mean you have a better chance of getting into your first choice. But, it most likely means you will be paying more for your education. With the drop in students, colleges and universities are looking to make up this lost income through higher tuition. The good news is there are plenty of ways to fund your education.

With Sallie Mae's education investment planner you can estimate costs at over 5,500 colleges and graduate schools for every year in school. Then you can build and save plans to compare costs. Forecast monthly loan payments for after you graduate. And explore the many funding options: savings, scholarships, grants, student loans.

When you sign up (remember, this is a free service) you are automatically entered in Sallie Mae's $1,000 monthly drawing.

What I Learned Wednesday - Repetition Works

Welcome to my very first "What I Learned Wednesday" post. The first of many, many more to come. Join the fun, post what you learned this week, and link up below. The code for the image is located in my sidebar. All I ask is you link back to this post. Oh, and make sure you link to your post and not your blog in general, okay?

Ever notice many of the classes taken are quite repetitive? I have taken several classes on variations of management accounting, statistics, ethics, and cross cultural management. Oh, I am an accounting major, in case you did not know this already. So, I have often wondered about this redundancy. I mean, why do I have to keep learning the same thing in a different way under a different course title? I believe they call it "sinking in". See, redundancy is the wrong word; they are repetitive. You know, like when you were younger and were learning how to spell and the teacher would have you write the words 5 or 10 times. This was to get the spelling to sink in and come time for the test you would know the correct spelling for each of those words, hopefully.

After taking my umpteenth management accounting class it is finally sinking in for me. I remember more and more of what terms mean, how they are used, the formulas, the reasoning, the what, why, where, how, and why. Who really thinks they can remember all of this stuff? I save all my accounting books for future references (that and I will never recuperate the costs). Now I know while I may need to reference some things, I will remember many others. And this is a GREAT feeling.

What have you learned this week? Grab the button from my sidebar, then add a link to your post below using MckLinky. Not sure how to link up? Leave a comment or send me an email (or both) and I will happily walk you through it.

Low Price & Eco-Friendly Textbooks

For the past two and a half years I have been paying anywhere from $100 to $200 for textbooks, per class! That is right! I just paid $200 for a textbook and another $100 for a workbook for just one class. And my school does NOT buy back books. This is a tremendous expense and one that should be addressed, but that is another post.

What would you say if I told you I found a way to pay much, much less than $200 for a textbook? You would be there, right? There is one little catch. I know, I know, but if you can handle it you will save a TON of money. And who does not want that?

First, an example. I bought the textbook Information Systems Today for just under $200 through my school. I am fairly certain I will not be using this book beyond this course, so that is $200 thrown out the window. For $89.67 I could have purchased a 180-day eTextbook subscription from CourseSmart. Yes, an eTextbook. These are available in two versions: online and download.

Since I take all of my classes online, an eTextbook would work out well for me. I would always have it available (as long as I had my laptop and internet access, for the online version), it would not take up space in my house (along with all of the other dust collecting texts), and it would save me money. In this instance it would be a $110.33 or 55% savings.

Unfortunately, I am almost through with my education and have paid full price these past two and a half years. Fortunately, you can learn from my mistakes. If you are in the digital age, then eTextbooks could be just what the professor ordered! Why not give them a try? Save a little money and a tree at the same time. Talk about your warm, fuzzy feelings!
